I am Jorge Hernandez

Industrial & Systems Engineering Student

Hello there!

Given the situation of the global pandemic and its side effects, I identified the opportunity to acquire new knowledge in developing web pages. Also, I took advantage and developed an additional networking tool to connect with other people cybernetically to build relationships through the exchange of life experiences, realities, and opportunities of professional growth regarding the circumstances.

I firmly believe great changes can be generated collectively and that these great changes will arise in situations where we believe we do not have control over them. It is a matter of reinventing ourselves to grow our knowledge network, as well as exploring the network of people who are willing to generate life-changing experiences, either in our lives or in the lives of others.

I invite you to know a little more about me and have a delightful experience throughout this networking-blog. I hope this can inspire you to move forward regardless of the circumstances that arise in your life as a professional, but also as an individual.

Success Stories

Calm Under Pressure

AON Robotics UPRM

After months of preparation and hours of sacrifice for our project, the day of the national competition arrived. Hours before our first matchup, as a team, we identified that one of our robots was failing in the item launch mechanism. We had two options: go to the match with our defective mechanism or, for lack of time, use a mechanism that we had designed during the preparation of the robots. As a mechanical engineer for the team, I decided that it was best to choose to use the old mechanism, this design was less effective in terms of robot load distribution but it gave us speed and lightness. As a result, we finished second in the nation, winning the Design Award from the competition.

Problem-Solving

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

As part of the course: Principles of Management, we were assigned a project where we had to identify a logistics problem within the campus or areas near the university and present a real-time solution. As a team, we identified that there was a problem finding parking before arriving to class. So we brought UPark to the table, a cutting-edge, cross-platform application designed to help users on college campuses throughout the Midwest make informed decisions about where to park. The application essentially creates a public pool of knowledge about the fullness of parking lots in and around campus. Anyone with the application can view or contribute to this pool, which leads to students spending less time looking for parking spots and more time doing things that matter.

Persistence

this one is personally heartening…

As young people, we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve as individuals and as professionals, but many times we forget to enjoy the process because for some reason we only focus on reaching the final goal. Enjoying the process involves recognizing that the path will not always go directly to where we want and will require various modifications, and sometimes changes, to continue our steps until reaching the goal.

Let’s go back to spring 2019, as a student and as an individual I had derailed and was not mentally healthy. Sleepless nights, depression, anxiety, among many other factors (sorry how cold this may sound). I am sure I am not the only one who has been through these difficulties and I will stand for those people who have been in their lows at any point in their lives. At that time, I thought that asking for help would make me weak and I realized that it was just the opposite. I began to seek professional treatments to help to deal with my problems. As a solution, I was recommended to take a semester gap from college and go outside of Puerto Rico to seek new opportunities and emotional development. I left for the United States – Pittsburgh, PA in the summer of 2019 to the home of some relatives. There, I started to reinvent myself and see life from a different perspective.

I attended a small Community College in the city to not fall behind in my studies and took some online electives for professional growth: Marketing & Excel. Also, I applied for different jobs and got a life-changing offer from Amazon, to work with their Logistics and Operations at their Delivery Station in Sewickley, PA. I am so grateful these two scenarios helped me to turn my opportunities into strengths, to enjoy the process and not only focus on the final goal, but also, to find myself as a person and not undervalue myself, and to serve as a leader and an example of improvement for other people.

Up to this day, I am super proud of how I handled the situation and was able to see the positive side of the whole situation. In a period of 5 months, I managed to create an emotional and professional balance. I finished the semester with a 3.6 GPA and at work, I started from the bottom up to become an Ambassador within the Station (see next timeline). Served as a leader who developed cultural ties and strengthened interpersonal skills among my employees and managed to get back on track and exceed my expectations exponentially. I hope this story can serve as motivation to other people and that they always keep in mind that life will put us in situations that we believe we cannot handle, but looking for help, being persistent, and working hard for what we want, we can make great things happen.
